Applied Doctoral Work in Practice
DHSc Capstone Project Examples: From Topic to Final Product
Useful DHSc capstone project examples show how a broad interest became a question someone could actually answer. Telehealth, patient education, and health equity are subjects. A project needs a defined setting, evidence you can obtain, a method, and a final product that fits the university's requirements.
The completed work below comes from official university accounts and a thesis repository. Schools use different names for this work, including thesis, research project, and capstone. We preserve those labels rather than presenting every DHSc project as the same assignment. The planning advice then helps you develop your own proposal without copying another graduate's study.

Telehealth Implementation
Jordan Schweidenback, University of New Haven
- Document
- Doctor of Health Science Thesis
- Year
- 2024
- Approach
- Qualitative Interviews
- Setting
- Three Health Systems
Schweidenback studied tensions in telehealth implementation through interviews with administrative, medical, and technology leaders. The repository identifies a qualitative approach and a framework connecting implementation tensions with management strategies. The project asks how an organizational change works, rather than whether telehealth is simply good or bad.
The planning lesson is to identify the people who experience the implementation problem and a method for understanding their perspectives. Before proposing a similar study, establish whether you can recruit the relevant roles and obtain the approvals your university requires. Do not assume that employment at a health system gives you permission to interview staff for research.
Planning Lesson: A model for narrowing an organizational implementation question.
Apply It Carefully: This is a thesis example; your program must approve its own scope and method.

- Primary Care in New York City
New Haven describes Bardhi's doctoral work on barriers to mercury-exposure screening and the need for evidence-based guidance. The study used qualitative research with primary care clinicians. The university reports publication in Public Health Reports and selection for a 2026 public-health conference presentation.
This example starts with a practical gap in how a health issue is addressed. For your own project, distinguish identifying a problem from proving that an intervention solves it. A study of clinicians' perspectives can produce useful implementation questions without claiming a measured change in patient outcomes.
Planning Lesson: A model for examining a practice gap through a defined group of clinicians.
Apply It Carefully: Publication and conference selection are outcomes of this graduate project, not requirements or promises for every DHSc.

- Journal Article
Yousafi's thesis examined barriers to recruitment and retention among underrepresented populations in cancer clinical trials. New Haven's account describes the move from doctoral work to a journal manuscript. It is an example of taking a broad interest in equity and focusing on a specific process within clinical research.
The transferable planning idea is the process boundary. Recruitment and retention are related, but they involve different stages, staff decisions, and sources of evidence. Define which stage your project can realistically examine. Avoid promising to solve a system-wide disparity when your access is limited to one team or setting.
Planning Lesson: A model for narrowing a health-equity interest to a specific organizational process.
Apply It Carefully: Keep the scale of your conclusions consistent with the evidence you can obtain.

Samantha Farrar, MCPHS University

- Doctor of Health Sciences
- Graduation
- 2022
- University Report
- July 2024
- Focus
- Silver Diamine Fluoride Evidence
MCPHS describes Farrar's work with a faculty collaborator on evidence concerning silver diamine fluoride in pediatric dentistry. The university connects the research to her dental-hygiene and public-health background and reports its later publication in a professional dental journal.
The lesson is to use your professional background to frame a question you understand, while still choosing an appropriate scholarly method. A focused evidence project can be different from collecting new patient data or implementing a clinical intervention. The example is about the structure of doctoral work, not advice to use a particular treatment.
Planning Lesson: A model for connecting a defined evidence question with existing professional expertise.
Apply It Carefully: Your supervisor must approve the research design and final product for your own degree.

These are examples of real graduate work with named authors and official sources. They demonstrate possible topics and scholarly products; they do not form a menu automatically accepted by every DHSc. A thesis at one university is not evidence that another school's capstone requires the same data collection, length, or publication.
Compare the actual requirements before selecting a program. Chatham's 2026–27 catalog organizes capstone work into project identification, design, proposal development, and implementation/dissemination. MCPHS describes an evidence-based healthcare capstone. Radford describes a proposal, implementation phase, and final defense. Our no-dissertation DHSc comparison helps you locate different formats.
Turn a Broad Topic Into a Feasible DHSc Project
Write a short project sentence containing the setting, the problem, the people or process involved, and the product you expect to deliver. For example, an illustrative education prompt could examine how a specific course assesses a defined clinical skill. That prompt is a planning example, not a reported graduate study or a claim of improved outcomes.
Then test access. Who owns the information? Who can authorize your work? Which people would need to participate? What happens if the organization changes its priorities? A narrow question with a usable evidence source is usually easier to complete than an ambitious question that depends on access you haven't secured.
Ask the program whether it permits the kind of work you propose: an evidence synthesis, educational product, evaluation, qualitative study, or implementation project. Use its handbook and your supervisor's guidance to decide, rather than assuming every applied doctorate uses the same method.
Plan Approval, Evidence, and the Final Deliverable
Separate your employer's permission from the university's review. A supervisor approving work time does not decide whether a project needs research review, privacy review, or a formal agreement. Bring the proposed method and data sources to the appropriate university office before collecting information.
Define how you will judge whether the project is complete. A curriculum product, a manuscript, a defense, and an implementation report have different audiences and requirements. Agree on the expected deliverable with your committee. If the project depends on organizational implementation, build a contingency discussion into the proposal rather than changing methods informally halfway through.
Choose a Program Around the Work You Want to Produce
For a teaching project, compare the DHSc programs for educators and their curriculum and assessment courses. For a workplace project, examine how the capstone sequence fits your job and access to the organization. The part-time DHSc comparison is useful when you expect to keep working through the final project.
If you want a sustained career creating original research, compare the DHSc and PhD routes. If you want to improve a defined professional practice, ask each DHSc program to show you the project handbook and explain the supervision process. The school's answers should make your next steps more concrete than the degree title alone.
Questions About DHSc Capstone Projects
What Is a DHSc Capstone Project?
It is a culminating scholarly project defined by the university. DHSc programs use different formats and names, including applied projects, manuscripts, capstones, and theses.
Can I Use My Workplace for a DHSc Capstone?
Possibly, if the project fits your program and the organization approves the necessary access. University review and permissions still apply; employment alone does not authorize research or access to records.
Does a DHSc Project Have to Be Published?
Follow the program's requirements. The examples here include graduates whose work was published, but publication after a degree does not establish a universal graduation requirement.
Can I Copy a Published Capstone Topic?
Use examples to understand how a question is narrowed and studied. Your proposal must be your own work and must fit your setting, evidence, supervision, and approval requirements.
How Do I Choose Between a Capstone and a Dissertation Program?
Compare the required method, supervision, final product, and your intended career. The label alone does not tell you how much research or writing the degree requires.
