DHSc and DrPH Accreditation, the Difference That Matters

If you take one thing from this comparison, take this. Public health has a programmatic accreditor, the Council on Education for Public Health, and DrPH programs can carry that seal. Some public health employers and most academic public health hiring committees look for it.

The DHSc has no equivalent. There is no body that accredits Doctor of Health Science programs as such, so every program on our ranked list rests on its university's institutional accreditation and nothing more. Read that gap carefully rather than as a verdict. It mostly reflects that hospital management is a large private-sector occupation and epidemiology is a smaller, heavily public-sector one. It does not mean a DHSc pays more than a DrPH for the same person doing the same work.

Picture the problem you want to be working on in ten years. If it has a denominator of a population, take the DrPH and get the CEPH-accredited one. If it has a denominator of a department, a clinic or a hospital, take the DHSc, and compare programs on credits, cost and capstone rather than on prestige.
