What Is a DHSc Degree? Doctor of Health Science Explained
A DHSc is a Doctor of Health Science, an applied doctorate for people who already work in health care. It teaches leadership, evidence-based practice and a final project, and it is built to be finished while you keep your job.

DHSc Meaning and What the Degree Is
DHSc is short for Doctor of Health Science. Some universities call it the Doctor of Health Sciences, and some abbreviate it D.H.Sc. or DHS. They are all the same kind of degree: a doctorate in health science aimed at practitioners rather than full-time researchers.
A quick note on the abbreviation. In the United Kingdom, DHSC also stands for the Department of Health and Social Care, a government body. This guide is about the degree.
Who a DHSc Degree Is For
The DHSc is a post-professional degree, which means it sits on top of a career you already have. Chatham and Campbell describe it that way, and the students are mostly clinicians, educators and health care managers. Physical therapists, occupational therapists and physician assistants are among the largest groups.
Entry requirements follow from that. Most programs ask for a master's degree. Radford wants three to four years of work experience in a health-related field, and Nova Southeastern requires prior health care experience. See DHSc admission requirements for GPA floors and the essay.
What You Study in a Doctor of Health Science Program
Coursework covers leadership, health policy, research methods and evidence-based practice, then narrows into a concentration. Radford offers health administration, community and public health, and higher education. Nova Southeastern offers advanced anesthesiology, education in health care, global health and telehealth. Thomas Jefferson offers integrative nutrition, digital and telehealth, and mind-body medicine.
The program ends with a final project. 13 programs on our list use an applied capstone, and 4 require a dissertation. An applied project lets you work on a problem at your own employer, which is why many working students prefer it. The no-dissertation DHSc programs page lists those programs.
How Long a DHSc Takes and How Many Credits It Requires
Programs on our list run from 35 to 70 credits among those that publish a count. Radford's 42 credits take seven sequential semesters at two courses each. Touro says a typical student finishes in two years, and Bridgeport says just over three.
Pace is the lever you control. If you plan to work full time, start with the DHSc programs for working professionals, then compare the part-time DHSc programs and the programs with the fewest credits before you compare tuition.
Online DHSc Programs and Campus Visits
Nearly every DHSc is taught online, because the students are working professionals. A handful add short in-person requirements: Nova Southeastern holds a one-week institute twice, New Haven requires on-campus residencies, and MGH Institute has one on-site visit at the end. Our guide to online DHSc programs lists the format for each school, and no-campus-visit programs covers the fully remote ones.
What a DHSc Does and Does Not Qualify You to Do
The degree qualifies you for roles where a doctorate is a screening criterion: program director, dean, faculty member in an allied health program, and senior leadership in a health system. Our guide to DHSc jobs shows what those roles pay.
It does not license you. Touro University Worldwide and Bay Path University both say outright that their DHSc does not lead to licensure or certification, and it adds no clinical scope of practice. Accreditation works at the university level: the Department of Education recognizes accrediting agencies rather than accrediting programs itself, and no programmatic accreditor covers the DHSc.
How the DHSc Compares With Other Health Doctorates
The DHSc is often weighed against three other degrees. The PhD is for research careers, the DrPH is for population health, and the DNP is for nurses. Each comparison turns on the work you want to do, so read the one that matches your short list.
